Dogfish Head Dinner

As I previously posted, Sunday night was the Dogfish Head Beer Dinner at Julian’s on Broadway in Providence.  We arrived a little before 6 and found a couple of Nikki’s regulars already there drinking.  We went inside and waited for them to start (which we were told would be promptly at 6).  We got our first beer, Festina Pêche and the first course, almond-mint pesto stuffed mission figs with pickled jalapeno pepper.  The beer was pumped through the Randall, a device that’s basically just a pipe filled with stuff (usually hops), that had strawberries and oranges in it.  It added a nice fruity dimension to an already awesome beer.  The fruit served to balance some of the tartness.  I was very impressed.  It was served in Dogfish Head snifters which ended up being given back to us as a gift to take home at the end of the night.

The next course was a champagne-poached pear, preserved lemon, and baby arugula salad with celery root chips and a green tea vinagarette.  It was served with Black & Blue.  The salad was really good, though, obviously, the lemons were super sour.  The root chips were awesome, as were the pears.  I’m not normally a Black & Blue fan, but the beer paired perfectly with the salad.

The third course was cucumber stuffed curried sticky rice balls golden beet carpaccio, and curled jicima.  This was paired with Chateau Jiahu, another beer I’m not overly crazy about, but was perfect with the appetizer.  The rice balls were awesome.  It’s a purple sticky rice, which I have only previously seen at Julian’s.  The only thing I wish is that the curry was a bit more predominant as I couldn’t taste it at all.

There was a palate cleansing intermezzo course.  For this, they gave us a ginger ice cream float made with 3 year old Pangaea with a ginger lace cookie.  It was really good, but we all wanted to actually try the aged Pangaea on its own, so they gave everyone a small glass of it.  I was impressed.  I wasn’t overly crazy about this beer fresh when I tried it at Nikki’s the night before, but it was awesome aged.

The entree came next.  We had a choice of brown sugar and soy marinated flank steak or seitan (a vegan steak) with pomegranate smashed carrots, herb dressed watercress, and meyer lemon coulis served with Immort Ale or pink peppercorn rubbed escolar with bruleed summer vegetables, butter braised frisee, and rhubarb Raison d’Etre reduction served with Palo Santo Marron.  I chose the steak and Susan got the escolar (which we later found out can cause some not so fun digestive issues).  They were both absolutely awesome and the pairings were spot on.

Finally, we had dessert.  There was also a choice for this course.  I had the vegan peach cheesecake with peanut butter drizzled over the top and raspberries served with World Wide Stout.  Susan got the quince, which sounded better and was served with Raison d’Extra.  My whole dessert was actually better, and while the pairing didn’t sound like it would work, it was perfect.

Brian, the bar manager at Julian’s, told us that they’ll be doing a beer dinner the last Sunday of every month.  July’s will be a Belgian beer dinner.  I haven’t made a reservation yet, but hopefully they’ll announce a menu soon and then I’ll make my reservation.  It should be good.

Dogfish Head Beer Dinner at Julian’s

I know it’s a little late, but this coming Sunday is a Dogfish Head beer dinner at Julian’s on Broadway in Providence.  It’s sold out (which is why this is a little late).  I imagine they’ll be open after it’s over and still have some great Dogfish Head beer on tap, like a keg of aged Pangaea, World Wide Stout, Raison d’Extra, Immort Ale, and Palo Santo Marron (among others).  The menu looks to be pretty unique (as with everything at Julian’s and Dogfish Head).  I’m looking forward to it and I will most definitely report back.

If you don’t have reservations and still want a great dining and beer experience, you must get over to Julian’s.  They currently have some great beers on tap, including Left Hand Imperial Stout, Ommegang Hennepin, and Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale (which is not part of the beer dinner).

I’m Married

My wedding went by without a hitch. It could not have been more perfect. If you are having a wedding in Rhode Island, you should seriously consider the Providence Biltmore Hotel. They made the day absolutely wonderful.

Note: I wrote this at one point planning to finish it before I left for the honeymoon, but didn’t. I’m just hitting publish on it and leaving it at that. :)

Twist on Angell

Over the weekend, we had gone to Twist on Angell with Susan’s parents.  I was kind of hesitant as I hadn’t heard anything great about it, but I also hadn’t heard anything bad (Julian’s stops serving from 2:45-5:00 on the weekends).

I was very pleased with the food.  I ordered the East Side Paella, which had clams, scallops, and shrimp in an awesome rice.  It was very good and very filling.  Susan had the Angel’s Pillows, which was raviolis stuff with butternut squash with this sauce that tasted like breakfast.  It was excellent and nicely sweet.  It had some walnuts and other stuff on it too (I can’t remember).  Susan’s mother had the Eggplant Parmesan Risotto, which was HUGE… and very good.  It wasn’t anything special, exactly what it said, but it was excellent.

I would definitely go back there again.  We all took home doggy bags.

Julian’s Now on Beer Advocate

Julian’s in Providence is now on Beer Advocate after being submitted about 2 months ago.  If you’re a fan of Julian’s and beer, get over there and write a review.  They had Stone Imperial Russian Stout on tap tonight… Holy crap!  It’s amazing (much better than the bottle).

Capitol Hill, The Smart Songs, and The Press Project

One of my former student employees told me his band, Capitol Hill (you didn’t think I was talking politics, did you?), was going to be playing at The Living Room last night. I decided to check it out since I had been meaning to see them a few times. They’re a hip hop act with a live band. There are 2 vocalists/rappers (they’re the ones who used to work for me) and a 4 piece band (drum, sax, guitar, bass). I was impressed. They played a mix of originals and covers, and some of the covers were just samples from songs. They played 5 or 6 songs during their short 45 minute set, but they had the small crowd, which was mainly there to see the second band, on their feet and groovin’.

Shoeless Jeff and Scott Free, the 2 rappers, are actually making an album of educational songs for children. You can check that project out at The Smart Songs. The album should be released in July and will be sold through Highlights magazine.

Following their set at The Living Room, we headed to Tazza Caffe to check out The Press Project, a similar hip hop/soul/funk/R&B group from Boston. I was pretty impressed with them. They had Tazza movin’ and groovin’. Their songs were a little smoother and more groove oriented than Capitol Hill. Opening for them was Iveoka, who has a beautiful voice, singing soul and R&B.  They’re playing next Friday at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain.

Nick’s on Broadway

Susan and I went out to dinner with some friends last night. We decided to try Nick’s on Broadway, a restaurant I have heard nothing but praise. I have to say that I was not overly impressed. The last thing I had heard about it was how affordable it was. Our experience was anything but affordable (almost $150, pre-tip, for 4 of us, which included 3 beers and 2 glasses of wine). There were only 2 entrees for under $20 (one was $19). The beer was a bit on the pricey side (and they didn’t even bring us their beer list at first, and they only had bottles).

I ordered the leg of lamb and Susan got the risotto grilled chicken. Mine was tasty, though a little on the tough side. It had a pine nut and onion cous cous with it that was really good. My portion was tiny, though. I wasn’t hungry when I left, but I felt like there should’ve been more. Susan’s meal was large. The risotto was really good and the chicken was perfect. However, the whole dish had this overwhelming lemon flavor to it that ruined it. You couldn’t taste anything else in it except the lemon.

Aside from the prices and the quality of the meal, the service was excellent. The waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable. They sat us right away even though we didn’t have a reservation. The only other complaint is that the space is kind of cramped. I’m not sure I’ll be going back right away. I have to wait for my wallet to recover. I really could not believe the cost consider I have heard that it was really reasonable in the past.

Julian’s

It seems I have yet to write about a new (to me) beer bar right down the street from where I live. Julian’s has always been a hipster bar/hangout to me. Apparently, I was very wrong. The place is a restaurant with a bar. It’s not very big and because I’ve only gone late at night (10:30 on a couple of Thursdays), not crowded. The beer selection is awesome. Last night, their taps were Duchesse, Maredsous 8, Lindeman’s Framboise, Great Divide Denver Pale Ale, Old Speckled Hen, Siberian Night, 90 Minute IPA and 2 others I don’t remember. Their bottle selection is just as good, though they can tend to be a bit pricey. I got the Siberian Night. It was absolutely awesome on tap.

The food is just as good. The first time I went, I just got dessert. It was a white chocolate cheesecake, that paired perfectly with the Framboise. Last night, I had their Hindenburger, which was a burger with apples and some other fruit spread on it. It was good, though quite messy.

Anyway, this place is totally worth it. It’s near the corner of Broadway and Vinton St. in Providence. I might be going again tonight for a full meal and more awesome beer.

Update: I think I now have a new favorite restaurant in Providence. The menu here is very unique and creative. The beer is to die for. I figured out the rest of the taps… Sea Dog Blueberry and La Chouffe. Tonight they had the Smuttynose Imperial Stout on tap rather than Siberian Night. I got the Smutty and a Duchesse. Both are amazing on tap. I had their gnocchi for dinner. It was fabulous with some currant and red pepper. The sauce was amazing. One of the best gnocchi dishes I’ve had. Susan got the Thai peanut shrimp with purple sticky rice. That was also really good. Having an awesome restaurant and a great beer bar right down the street from me could prove to be dangerous to my belly. :)

ProvidencePalate.com

I stumbled upon ProvidencePalate.com the other day while reading the Daily Dose.  It’s a new site for Providence and RI “foodies”.  I’m not really sure what direction they’re looking to head with the site, though it seems like it might end up being a Chowhound for RI (for some reason Providence, in all our restaurant glory, doesn’t have its own forum on Chowhound).  It’s mainly a forum divided into different sections for types of food and drink (yes, there is a beer forum, the only place besides the pizza forum I’ve participated so far as I’m not a huge “foodie” even though I like to eat).

What could make this site really good is if it started to incorporate user reviews of the various restaurants in Providence and Rhode Island (though I wouldn’t be disappointed if they limited it to just Providence proper at first).  That would make the site a nice resource for people looking for a place to eat.  Chowhound is difficult to navigate I’ve found, mainly because Providence posts are buried in with the rest of New England.  CitySearch is nice, but it’s not always current.  That leaves some of the local papers and such.  A site where users can post brief reviews of a restaurant would be great (I’m thinking something along the lines of Beer Advocate style reviews).

Anyway, they want people who are into food to take a look at the site and start posting.  It’s growing each day, though there are currently only 137 members.  Check it out.

Town Wine & Spirits

I decided to check out Town Wine & Spirits in East Providence last night.  I had been in contact with their beer manager, Taylor, on Beer Advocate and decided to check it out.  They were tasting St. Bernardus beers.  There were only 4 that I hadn’t tried before (Watou Tripel, 60th Anniversary Abt 12, Grotten Brune, and Grotten Flemish Ale), but it was worth trying.  I think I’ll be picking up a bottle of the 60th Anniversary soon (before they run out).  It’s aged nicely over the past 2 years.

Anyway, this store is great.  The selection is smaller than Nikki’s, but has some serious potential and is still pretty amazing for the limited space.  They do a mix-a-six with 10% off and have a bunch of 6 packs and beers in coolers.  The prices set this place apart.  The prices are absolutely amazing!  Rochefort 10 is only $5.99.  The prices for other beers are closer to what they normally are, but if you’re looking for a bunch of Belgians or 750’s or bombers, this is the place to go (if you’re within a reasonable distance of course).

I was told they will be moving the beer section (which is awkwardly in the middle of a bunch of wines) closer to the end near the whiskey section, something they are known for (they had some single malts in the $600+ range).

I probably won’t be making this my regular stop because it’s farther from me than Nikki’s and more difficult to get to (no easy direct route), but I will likely be going there every now and then to stock my “cellar” and do some tasting (and to see how things are going there).  They’re just starting to get a reputation for beer, but this is a good start.
