The interwebs have been abound with rumors since Trey’s latest interview had him saying how he would love nothing more than to play “You Enjoy Myself” for the rest of his life with the other 3 guys from Phish.
Tom Marshall, Trey’s childhood friend and songwriting partner, also said in another interview that he and Trey have been writing songs together again and have about 15 complete. He doesn’t know if they’ll be Phish songs or used for some other project.
There’s a new rumor (and this is likely just that) that Phish will definitely be reuniting and there will be a new album produced by Steve Lillywhite (he produced Billy Breathes and those famous Dave Matthews Band Lillywhite sessions).
Anyway, as much as I would absolutely love for Phish to be back (and I have no doubt they’ll be back), I don’t want them to suck. They didn’t have too many great highlights post-hiatus and it would just be super sad to see them come back to be exactly what Trey said he didn’t want them to be… caricatures of themselves (and honestly, its sounding like that’s what’s happening right now, though I hope I’m wrong). However, August 15 will be exactly 5 years since their breakup began, and many on the now defunct People for a Clearer Phish (the best Phish discussion list of their time) had said they’ll be back for a 5 year “reunion”.

I saw both of those interviews, and while I’m excited at the prospect, my fears are the same as yours. IF they get back together, I don’t want it to be a disappointment.
I guess only time will tell. But, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to my wife, “Man, I wish there was a Phish show to go to this year.” It’s more than just a concert (or two), it’s a long weekend or a mini-vacation, centered around some fantastic music. The last shows we went to were the Noblesville, IN (formerly Deer Creek) shows. (They were both really good concerts, btw, if you’re looking for examples of some strong post-hiatus shows.) We stayed in Indy and had a wonderful time. I miss that, the whole experience.
Anyways, I’m rambling at the nostalgia (a sign getting older, I guess). It sounds like you had a good time on your honeymoon. Have fun enjoying all that beer you brought back!
Every time I go to a show, festival, or pretty much anything, I catch myself thinking “god I wish we were going to see Phish instead”
If they suck it will be devastating.
But if they don’t suck…it will be devastating to my bank account and professional ambitions.
I feel the same way. At every concert I go to now, I always think “if this were Phish, I would be in heaven”. That’s not to say the other shows aren’t as fun… but I guess in a way, they aren’t. No band has ever gotten me on my feet the way Phish had. Unfortunately, I’ll be going to any Phish shows solo. The new wife can’t stand them.
Just saw Pearl Jam in West Palm Beach, and I have to tell you I sorely was missing the Phish scene that night.
I have to catch you on a small error, however: Coventry was 15-Aug 2004, which would make this coming August the FOURTH anniversary.
and thank goodness, because I got really scared that I lost a year!
Oops. I just got back from a vacation. My math skills are off.
