Last night, Susan and I split my bottle of Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron, a brown ale aged in a 10,000 gallon barrel made of Paraguayan Palo Santo wood. We split it because at 12%, it surely would’ve knocked one of us out.
The beer pours a deep dark brown with a small head. It smells of vanilla and malty sweetness. The taste is much like a brown ale, though a bit smoother and with a touch of vanilla and caramel from the wood. The beer is very smooth and goes down nice and easy. It’s full bodied, making it a bit heavier than your average brown ale. With an ABV of 12%, you’d expect a lot of heat, but it’s just not present, a pleasant surprise. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something a little different. It’s very tasty and very easily drinkable, even for 12%.

I haven’t reviewed many beers on BA yet, but this was one of them as I was amazed at how great of a beer this was. I had it at a tasting at Town Wine and bought a 4-pack for home. I’m a big fan of Dogfish and this is one of their best brews.
I like most of their more special beers. This was no exception. I’m actually not a big fan of the 60 or 90 Min, believe it or not (and I am a hophead).
Wow! That is amazing that you don’t like 90 or 60. They are two of my “stand-by’s” when it comes to beer.
It’s not that I don’t like them… more that I think there are way better IPA’s and DIPA’s available. I do like the 90, but there’s something about the 60 that just doesn’t do it for me.
