Susan and I decided to join a gym to get in shape for our wedding and to just get healthier in general. After much thought and having a hard time deciding which gym to join, we decided to join Davol Fitness. The other options were to join the PC gym, which is no longer free for faculty and staff, the Brown gym which I would have to pay for (and lacks parking), Capitol Fitness (or something like that) in the Westin, or one of the chain gyms like Gold’s, World, or Planet Fitness. We decided to check out Davol Fitness because it’s not far from where we live, cheaper than Capitol Fitness (which told us was about $75/month), and I heard lots of rave reviews of it. I didn’t want to work out with the students who work for me and PC isn’t convenient for Susan to get to after work because she takes the bus. Brown lacked parking and I would still have to pay (and isn’t really close to home). And the chain gyms are usually really crowded.
We toured Davol Fitness on a Wednesday after work. The woman said it was busy, but there were plenty of empty machines and not a whole lot of people there. It was nice. The locker rooms were very clean. We started using it this week on a trial membership and plan on completely joining today. The only reason I’m even going into this is because if you’re in the Providence area, this is a great place to work out. The employees are all very friendly and the place is very clean and well kept. I am very impressed with it and think we made a great decision. I can’t really say anything about the classes as I haven’t taken part in any of them, but everything else is really great.
