in Ale and Beer.
Nikki’s, moving their tastings to Thursday nights, did a tasting of Southern Tier’s big beers. We started off with Big Red, an Imperial Red Ale. It was good, though not really my style. Kind of mild on the flavors. We moved on to Hoppe, an Imperial Extra Pale Ale (basically a mild Double IPA). This had a nice clean crisp flavor to it with a nice malt/hops balance. Next was my favorite of the night, Un-Earthly, a Double IPA with a lot of floral hops notes. The hops flavor in this one was very different from anything I’d had before. Definitely a really good Double IPA. After that was my least favorite of the night, Jah-Va, an Imperial Coffee Stout. I rarely find a beer that I dislike, but this was one of them. It was very syrupy and had too much coffee bitterness to it (and I do like many coffee flavored beers). It was a bit much for my taste. The next one fixed that problem. It was Choklat, and Imperial Chocolate Stout. This one was excellent. It was brewed with Belgian chocolate and has a lot of great flavor to it. It would pair well with fresh Tollhouse cookies. And last, but certainly not least, was the Imperial Barleywine, Backburner. This was a nice mellow flavor and very mild for a Barleywine, though that could be because my taste buds were shot at that point after the IPA’s and the stouts. I’ll have to revisit that one, though I did like it.
All in all, it was a good tasting. I had never tried any Southern Tier beers before that. It was nice to try something new and a great brewery from the Northeast as well (they’re from New York). In addition to the Un-Earthly, the Choklat and Backburner were my next favorites (in that order). Unfortunately, with the hops shortage, I’m not sure they’ll be able to keep making Un-Earthly. I’ll have to get a bottle on my next beer run (surprise surprise, next Thursday when he does a Boulder Beer tasting).
I had picked up Phish’s Vegas 96 (well, ordered it from Dry Goods). The album is fantastic (though I haven’t watched the DVD yet; I got the limited edition pack with the DVD and book). It makes me wish I had been there, it sounds like it was an awesome show to have attended. They open up with Wilson and move to Peaches en Regalia (a Zappa tune). The setlist is amazing from the beginning of the first set through the end of the encore when they brought out Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde from Primus and 4 Elvis impersonators.
While almost all the songs are played great, they play Harpua (the encore) a little slow and Trey screws the vocals up a bit because of the speed. Other than that, it’s a great encore and great story. Check out the setlist at Phish.Net’s Helping Phriendly Book for more notes on the guests and covers.
This is a must have for any Phishhead or anyone who just likes Phish. It’s a great live album of an entire uncut performance.

Yes, I still buy CD’s. Digital music hasn’t come along enough to really give me the full sound that I seek, so I buy CD’s (for when I buy a great sound system for home). I had to return a Christmas gift, Family Guy volume 5 DVD’s (I got 2 of them this year). So I used the credit from Newbury Comics to pick up a few CD’s.
First, I always peruse their used CD selection (which is actually pretty good and really cheap). I found a few I was interested in, but only got one of them. I got The Samples album Here and Somewhere Else for $2.99 used. The case looks a little beat up (though no cracks, which is nice), but the CD is in great condition. I don’t have any other Samples albums, but I did collect some mp3’s when I was in college. They’re a great laid back band from Colorado.
Then I went through the regular CD’s. Generally, I go to certain bands I’m looking for, but if I don’t know what I want, I start at A and work my way through. There I found Ryan Adams‘ Easy Tiger (it’s not his latest, but it’s the one before that) used for $10.99. It was like $15 or more new, so that was a good find (though the case was cracked in places, which annoys me, but I’ll just swap it with an empty case I have). Continuing through, I picked up Barenaked Ladies‘ Au Naturale Live album. I love BNL and they’re really fun live (I’ve seen then a few times around the Stunt era). Finally, I noticed they had Great Big Sea albums and picked up their live album called Courage & Patience & Grit. This is a band from New Brunswick Newfoundland, Canada that’s absolutely fabulous. I have yet to listen to this one, but I have high hopes for it as they’re such a great band.
As I listen to all the albums, I’ll write more about them. I realize they’re not the newest, but I rarely buy albums right after they come out.
