As promised, here’s a writeup for Tuckerman’s Headwall Alt, a German-style Altbier. The beer is a nice ruby brown color with a small head. I have a feeling this beer has been affected by the night in my car and travels from New Hampshire to Rhode Island. However, it still tastes great and is a great beer, even if the head and carbonation aren’t the same. Tuckerman bottle conditions all their beers (well, their 3 beers). I get the feeling they’re about as close to home brewers as you can get from a commercial brewery. The beer tastes of roasted and caramel malts with a bit of hops to balance it out. It has a nice flavor and medium body. It’s a very easy drinking beer, yet still full of flavor.
Tuckerman also has a Pale Ale and a stout (6288 Stout, named after the height of Mount Washington). All their beers feature images of Mount Washington as they get their name from the legendary Tuckerman’s Ravine, known for it’s great spring skiing (for those of you who have a flair for the wild and crazy, as it’s extreme skiing New England style). The Pale Ale has a picture of people skiing the ravine, the Headwall Alt has a picture of a hiker on the headwall, and the 6288 Stout has a picture of the weather observatory at the summit. Someday, I’ll drive up the auto road to the summit, and I’d even like to try hiking up to the ravine some spring to catch the skiers (I’m nowhere near the level I’d need to be to ski that).
