One and a Half Beers

Tonight, I had a beer (one) and Susan had a beer (a half, for me at least, though more like 1/10).  Unfortunately for me, hers was better.  I’ll start with a full review of mine and then go into my thoughts on the few sips of hers I had.  Both beers were imported from the United Kingdom.

I had McEwan’s Scotch Ale, a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy.  The beer poured a thick looking dark ruby black/brown color with a good sized lighter tan head.  The beer seemed like it’d be a good one.  The smell was of caramel malts, a little bit of roasted malt, a hint of alcohol, a slight whiskey scent, and a bit of anise/licorice.  So far, so good.  The taste is where it fell off a bit.  At first, it tasted like a little bit of that whiskey flavor, the roasted and caramel malts, the anise, and a bit of alcohol.  The alcohol and whiskey flavors died off completely as the beer warmed, but the other flavors became a bit milder.  There wasn’t a whole lot of complexity to the flavor and it was bordering on bland.  It felt a bit thinner than I would prefer.  It’s drinkable, but nothing I’d bother with again.  I wasn’t overly impressed, except for the way it looked.  There was also no lacing on the glass.

Susan, however, had a real winner.  She had Meantime’s Coffee Porter, an English Porter.  Now, I can’t give this one a full review because I only had a few sips.  The beer is dark and stout-like.  The flavor is very stout-like (like a coffee flavored stout, which is pretty normal for a stout).  The flavor is mostly coffee with some roasted and dark chocolate malts mixed in.  The flavor is very complex.  It’s something I’d need to drink again to really know for sure how I like it.  I’ll probably be buying another one of these for myself soon.  This one is highly recommended.
