Tonight I decided to have another of the beers recommended by Mike at Nikki’s Liquors… Aventinus. It’s a classic, an original, and a must have. The beer is a German Weizenbock. It pours a thick cloudy brown color with a huge tan head. The beer smells of fruit. I noticed some cherry scents in there. The smell was sweet with spices. I could tell this was going to be a complex beer.
At first sip, I noticed the spice flavors, some cloves maybe. It’s very malty and loaded with wheat and yeast. The flavor almost reminds me of a Belgian Quad. As the beer warms, it gets a slight flavor of banana and more malt. The beer has a relatively high amount of alcohol at 8.2% ABV, but you don’t notice it at all in the taste. There’s a moderate amount of carbonation and the beer feels almost like liquid bread. It’s not a fast drinker because of the amount of wheat and yeast in it. It’s got a thicker mouthfeel, but that doesn’t detract from it. If anything, it adds.
This was a really great beer and completely worth trying. If you like beer in general, this is a must have.
