I just wanted to let anyone who might read my “Beer-of-the-Day” posts that it will be on hiatus for at least a few days while I nurse a cold. While one beer might not make a difference, it’s the cold that makes the difference. With my taste buds and nose not functioning to their fullest capacity, I won’t be able to enjoy the beer to the fullest. If you find yourself wanting to try new beers, but you’re sick, you should skip the good beers and go for something more familiar. This way you can have the new or better beer when you have your senses working in top notch condition. Also, if you’re sick and on medication, it goes without saying that you should avoid drinking alcohol.
Now for the beers I had yet to write about… First is Stone’s Arrogant Bastard. The beer pours a thicker darker amber color with a nice light tan head. The smell is difficult to figure out. There’s some spicy, piney hops and some roasted malt scents. The flavor is big. Those spicy, piney hops come out front with some slight malty sweetness mixed in. There seems to be some caramel malt flavors in there as well. The beer feels thick and heavy and is definitely a slow sipping beer. The beer is good, though not something I’d see myself drinking often. I drank it while eating Kung Pao chicken, which had a bit of a kick to it. This beer paired nicely with that meal, neither one overpowering the other.
Second beer (same night) was Vichtenaar. It’s brewed by the same brewery that makes Duchesse de Bourgogne, which I reviewed a while back. They’re both Flanders Red Ales. As such, they’re quite similar. In fact, they’re so similar that I had a difficult time distinguishing between the 2. The main difference I noticed was that Vichtenaar was a bit fruitier. The beer poured a reddish brown color with a moderate tan head. It smelled nice and fruity and malty. The flavors were very fruity and malty. I also had this one for dessert and it worked quite well as dessert. There was a slight tartness to it, but nothing overpowering. It was a good beer, something I’d definitely drink again.
Hopefully, this cold will pass quickly and I’ll get back to drinking more beer. My fridge is stocked, and I have some nice beers to get through.
