Sam Kininger Band at Tazza

Last night while trying to figure out if I wanted Kung Pao chicken or General Tso’s chicken, a former employee of mine (he graduated in 2006) gave me a call because he was in the city and was going down to Tazza check out the Sam Kininger Band (and I told him when he was in Providence to give me a call). I said I’d go, not knowing what to expect. Well, the band was awesome. I had never heard of them, but I’m always up for checking out a new band. They were funky, jazzy, bluesy, and a little hip hoppy all at the same time. After checking out their website, I learned that Sam Kininger, the lead man who plays the saxophone, used to play sax in Soulive (a band I had never listened to before, but knew of through the jam band scene). While he wasn’t the most impressive sax player I’ve seen, he was quite good and his band was incredible. I only knew 2 of the songs they played as they were covers, but the rest of it was better anyways. They really knew how to just jam and really ripped it up at times. The bass player and the drummer were probably the best musicians in the band. Unfortunately, I don’t have the setlist, though hopefully I’ll find one at some point. We didn’t end up staying for the whole thing. I was tired and had to get up this morning and the others were off to a party.

If you like funk, jam bands, jazz, or live hip hop (on real instruments), you need to check these guys out. The cover was only $5 and worth every penny.
